When it comes to caring for your skin, there is an influx of information about the best morning and evening skincare routines. It all can get easily overwhelming. To get this all wrinkled out (pun intended), Dr. Tan, an expert in all things facial aesthetics and skin treatment, goes through the most effective steps to take to achieve—and maintain—that youthful glow, plus she pulled together some of her favorite ZO-Skin Health products to help get the job done.
Dr. Tan is a firm believer of ‘not overcomplicating’ skin care. Her skin care philosophy follows the rule of KISS – Keep It Simple, Stupid, from The Pro-Aging Playbook by cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank. Go back to the basics. All you need is cleanser, moisturizer and sun protection.
Step 1: Start With A Cleanser
First, rinse skin with lukewarm water. Then, apply a cleanser suited for your skin type. Dr. Tan recommend a formula with AHA’s or BHA’s such as the Exfoliating Cleanser for cell turnover for oily or lackluster skin or Hydrating Cleanser for drier skin types. Make sure you massage the formula in gentle, circular motions over your face and neck. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.
Step 2: Exfoliate Regularly
Baby’s skin takes 14 days to replenish itself completely. With aging the skin dries out quicker and takes longer to replenish. If you don’t want your skin to lose its smoothness and glow, you need a good exfoliator to remove dead cell build-ups and kick-start the renewal process. Make sure you use products that clean your skin without breaking its natural barrier. Offects® Exfoliating Polish contains vitamins C, A and E that give your skin an antioxidant protection and preserve its natural hydration. Exfoliate regularly to achieve a smooth, glowing complexion.
Step 3: Apply Moisturizer
Dr. Tan likes moisturizers that can strengthen the skin’s protective barrier, and overtime help to maintain and build healthy skin hydration. The ZO Daily Power Defense is not only a science-backed luxe moisturizer that minimizes signs of premature aging while infusing extended hydration, it also contains potent antioxidants that protect against environmental skin aging. Gently apply to the face in a circular, upward motion.
Step 4: Apply Sunscreen In The Morning
It is never an overkill in Hawaii. It is absolutely essential to apply sunscreen every morning all year long. Look for a formula that says “broad spectrum,” which means UVB and UVA coverage and SPF 30 or above. A powerful sunscreen is essential to your anti-aging regime. Sunscreen & Primer SPF30 is a tinted sunscreen formulated with titanium and zinc oxides contains vitamins E for additional antioxidant benefits, and act as a primer. In sunscreen feels “heavy” on your skin, choose a non-greasy formula such as the Oclipse® Daily Sheer which blends seamlessly into the skin and gives you a long-lasting protection.
Step 5: Apply A Retinoid Or Serum In The Evening
Aside from sunscreen, retinol is the most important step in an anti-aging routine. Retinol works hard to prevent new wrinkles from forming, as well as smooth out any fine lines that you may already have. It will also help to decrease pigmentation by cellular turnover. Retinol Skin Brighter (0.25%, 0.5%, 1%) not only contains specially encapsulated delivery system for a targeted, controlled release of retinol for maximized brightening, collagen and elastin production, it is also formulated with Bakuchiol, proven skin conditioner that soothes and calms skin to improve product experience, sans ‘retinol irritation.’
Step 6. Stick to your skincare regimen
It is natural to expect immediate results when you start a new skincare regimen. However, some product and ingredients take weeks or even months to work. And ultimately, beautiful skin requires a continuous, lifelong routine. Don’t give up on your skincare regimen, if you don’t see the expected results straight away, it takes time. Take a few steps now and your skin will thank you later.
Step 7: Make An Annual In-Office Plan
In lieu of an abundance of products daily, Dr. Tan recommends counteracting the effects of sun damage and aging with at least a yearly in-office treatment like laser resurfacing, radiofrequency skin tightening, and/or injectables. As the evolution of technology in the aesthetics realm has soared, laser treatment and minimally invasive injectables have really followed suit with less downtime and discomfort. Many even tout longer-lasting results that are instantly visible while working behind the scenes deep down in your skin to boost collagen production for months after each treatment. Book a consultation with Dr. Tan to learn about the latest ways to tighten, brighten, plump and smooth your skin. Clear skin is always a sign of youth and vitality that Dr. Tan try and give that to patients at any age.
