SCULPTRA
ACTIVATE THE POWER OF YOUR SKIN
Dr. Tan utilizes Sculptra®, a collagen inducing injectable, as a foundation for facial contouring and volumization to create stunning, natural-looking and sustainable results.
How Sculptra Aesthetics Works
Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen—the most common protein in the body that is used to form a framework to support cells and tissue.
With age, your skin’s natural collagen supply decreases and you may start to notice that your skin doesn’t have the same resiliency and fullness it did in the past, resulting in wrinkles and loss of facial volume and sagging. Sculptra is made with biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid. When injected, Sculptra activate the skin’s natural regenerative process, by working deep within the dermis to help stimulate and replace lost collagen and gradually restore the look of fullness to areas of the face affected by time.
Sculptra is an essential component of many of Dr. Tan’s patient-specific, combination sculpting protocol to subtly lift tissue, tighten the skin, fill facial hollows, replaced lost volume, and slow the aging process. Sculptra is unique when it comes to restoring volume in the skin because it works by actually inducing the body to produce and lay down new collagen. Though it can take more time than hyaluronic acid fillers for the full effect to be complete, it is worth the wait. The volume can last two years or more, and most find the results stunning. Most common areas treated are:
Temple Hollows | Cheek Hollows | Nasolabial Folds | Cheek Depressions | Marionette Lines | Facial Lipoatrophy

Frequently Asked Questions
Preparing for your treatment
Sculptra injections typically take less than an hour. Dr. Tan will first discuss your goals, examine the area she is planning to treat, mark the injection locations, and prep the area with an antiseptic.
At MD Skin Lab, Dr. Tan prioritizes patient comfort and experience. You may also receive topical anesthetic before the injections, and Dr. Tan mix the Sculptra injection with a numbing agent, like lidocaine, to help alleviate discomfort. Most people report very little pain.
After your injections, Dr. Tan will massage the area to help distribute the Sculptra and prevent the formation of lumps or nodules under the skin. You’ll also need to massage the area on your own, five times a day for about a week after the procedure, to prevent any nodules from sticking around. Dr. Tan will show you how.
Recovery and results
Most patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately after their treatment. Injectors typically send patients home with a small ice pack, which you can apply to the injection site several times that first day to help reduce any discomfort or swelling.
You should be able to cover any bruising with makeup.
When Sculptra is first injected, you may notice an immediate plumping effect which gives the appearance of a full correction. The results will diminish slightly as your body metabolize the product to build collagen. You’ll begin to see the longer-lasting results from boosted collagen production about three months after the initial series of treatments and maximum results between four and six months after the first treatment session. Multiple sessions (no sooners than 4 weeks after the injection session) may be needed. The number of treatment sessions depends on various factor, such as your needs and severity of the area you want to correct.
Potential side effects
You can expect some swelling and bruising at the injection site. Other common side effects include:
- redness
- tenderness
- pain
- bleeding
- itching
- bumps
Some people may develop lumps under the skin and skin discoloration. In a 2015 study, the reported incidence of nodule formation associated with Sculptra was 7 to 9 percent. This appears to be related to the depth of the injection, highlighting the importance of finding a qualified professional.
Sculptra shouldn’t be used by people with a history of irregular scarring or anyone allergic to the ingredients of Sculptra. It shouldn’t be used at the site of skin sores, acne, cysts, rashes, or other skin inflammation.
