MICRONEEDLING
OUR FAVORITE WAY TO FIX ALL YOUR SKIN ISSUES
Human skin has miraculous healing properties, so microneedling channels the idea of creating superficial wounds to trigger a healing response in the body makes sense as a great way to improve our skin.
How Microneedling Work
Fine lines, skin laxity and age spots are some of the most common concerns we hear about at MD Skin Lab. These signs of aging are often the result of collagen depletion within the dermal structure. As the skin loses the support of this essential protein, it can become loose, and wrinkles can develop. At the same time, exposure to UV rays over time can add to the damage, creating brown spots and other pigmentation irregularities.
Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a popular cosmetic procedure that entails making minute punctures in the skin with very small hyper sterilized needles. Dr. Tan uses the clinically-proven and FDA-approved SkinPen device to perform microneedling.
SkinPen is a cutting-edge microneedling device that makes highly-controlled micro-channels on the skin’s surface to activate collagen production without unnecessary side effects or trauma to the skin. The treatment is simple but very effective in leaving the skin looking healthier and better toned.
Microneedling is applied through a skin pen, which is a hand-held device that gently creates hundreds of microscopic punctures to the skin. These minute injuries trigger the body to react and ‘heal’ the wound by producing collagen and elastin, two proteins responsible for skin resilience and hydration. This improves the texture and firmness of the skin. There is an immediate results that people describe as a ‘glow’ to their skin, which is actually mostly related to temporary swelling. But it serves as a nice interim benefit while the longer-term results of collagen production takes effect, improving pores, texture, acne scarring, and skin laxity.

Microneedling With PRP
Microneedlingis an effective way to deliver powerful nutrients like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into the skin. PRP may just be the future of skincare. It is derived from our own blood, and contains platelets that secrete high level of growth factors that have been shown to be effective for wound healing, as well as improving skin elasticity, volume, and texture
When platelet-rich plasma is reintroduced to skin on its own through a non-invasive procedure such as microneedling where hundreds of mciroscopic channels are created, cell turnover is stimulated, and in turn, collagen and elastin production is ramped up for a plumper, tighter, and smoother complexion.
Frequently Asked Questions
The treatment experience
A topical anesthetic will be used to numb the surface of the skin to reduce the chances of pain or discomfort throughout the procedure. Dr. Tan will adjust the SkinPen device according to your particular skin depth and concerns. Next, the microneedling procedure begin by creating multiple tiny punctures on the skin with the device. This treatment takes about thirty minutes, and the fine punctures are not noticeable after the procedure.
Recovery and results
Microneedling with SkinPen is a safe procedure that doesn’t cause unnecessary trauma to the surrounding skin tissues. The micro-punctures are enough to stimulate collagen production without causing harsh side effects. As such, the patient requires little recovery time, and most patients require no downtime at all.
After microneedling with SkinPen, you might experience irritation and notice some redness in the skin for the first few days. This is a natural reaction to the treatment as the skin rebuilds and replenishes. The skin is also bound to become far more sensitive to sunlight throughout recovery, so wearing sunscreen is necessary.
While patients will often see improvement after the first treatment, more significant results do not appear until after two to three treatments (to coincide with the body’s natural collagen production). Skin will continue to improve over the next six to twelve months post-treatment, and Dr. Barrett will provide you with a list of necessary precautions and a proper skin care routine to ensure optimal results.

Preparing for PRP microneedling
PRP microneedling is a multi-step process that involves the following:
- Step 1: Dr. Tan draws a small bit of blood from your arm.
- Step 2: Your blood will be placed into a centrifuge where it will be separated into platelet-rich plasma, platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells.
- Step 3: The platelet-rich plasma is collected and applied topically to the skin.
- Step 4: Microneedling is performed to stimulate the body’s regenerative processes and deliver the platelet-rich plasma deeper into the dermal structure.
All the steps of the process are performed in sequence during a single treatment session. You should not feel any pain during your procedure, thanks to topical numbing cream that is applied before the treatment. A gel is also placed onto the skin to allow the device to glide smoothly across the dermis. Treatment times vary somewhat depending on the size of the area you want to address but typically take well under an hour to complete. You will be able to walk out of our office and directly back to your daily routine.
