How Dermal Filler Works

Dermal fillers have revolutionized minimally invasive facial rejuvenation, due to their ease of use and their ability to create a natural yet elegant improvement.  They are a family of hyaluronic-acid based injectable gel (Restylane Contour, Juvéderm, Radiesse, Sculptra and RHA) that primarily works by supplementing your skin’s natural reserves of the smooth, biocompatible, and biodegradable HA gel, and therefore restore your youthful vitality, vibrance, smoothness, and facial volume.  When injected into strategically chosen locations on your face, the hyaluronic acid adds immediate volume to your face filling out the wrinkles and facial folds.

Depending on the filler used and the areas treated, you can expect to enjoy your natural, beautiful enhancements for many months before another session is required.  Dr. Tan’s most requested dermal filler treatments are lip augmentation, non-surgical rhinoplasty (liquid rhinoplasty), and full facial rejuvenation with nonsurgical facelift.  Dr. Tan is also skilled in treatment for men including facial sculpting and contouring.

Specializing in natural results, Dr. Tan will create a personalized plan for you during your private consultation.  Dermal fillers are most commonly used in the following areas:

Under-eye | Cheek | Nasolabial Fold | Lips | Marionette Lines | Chin| Temple | Nose | Neck | Chest | Hands

Candidate For Dermal Filler Treatment

Dermal fillers are a good option for men and women looking to turn back the clock or camouflage imperfections without incisions or downtime.  Most fillers contain synthetic ingredients that mimic natural ingredients in the body, so the risk of irritation or an allergic reaction are extremely low. They are not derived from animals.

Good candidates for dermal fillers are over 21 years of age and are in good mental and physical health, do not smoke and are committed to follow all pre- and post-treatment instructions provided by Dr. Tan. They should have reasonable expectations for their outcome based on their private consultation with Dr. Tan at MD Skin Lab.  Dermal fillers are not the best choice for individuals with significant aging symptoms. These products are not effective in reversing severe skin laxity – only surgical procedures can deliver desired results in these instances. However, dermal fillers can be used with facial surgery to boost the benefits and enhance the overall outcome.

Selecting A Facial Plastic Surgeon For Your Treatment

When it comes to dermal fillers, Dr. Tan has a refined and thorough understanding of the various types of fillers available. Her exceptional results with dermal fillers can be attributed to her diligence in choosing the right type and dose of filler along with identifying the ideal injection site for each.  In fact, she is proud to be an exclusive provider of the RHA Collection of designer fillers. These fillers are the only FDA approved hyaluronic acid filler for dynamic wrinkles and folds, and they are designed to be resilient enough to adapt to your facial movement, which may provide a more natural look at rest and in motion.

With the rise of non-surgical treatments such as dermal fillers, there are many important things to consider when it comes to searching through the different providers that may offer the aesthetic treatment. A study published in the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery journal notes the value of choosing an MD for your injections. Among the many surveyed, the consensus remained the same. The more training a provider has, the better equipped they are at administering these treatments. Those surveyed believe plastic surgeons and dermatologists are the most capable providers of injectables. Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon will confirm that your injector is well-trained in facial anatomy and well prepared to handle any complications in the unlikely event that something goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Preparing for your treatment

Dermal filler injections are considered safe and comfortable for the majority of patients today. However, there are steps you can take to minimize potential side effects like bruising and swelling after your treatment. Dr. Tan may advise you to follow these steps in the days preceding your session:

  • Do not take any non-steroidal pain medications the week before your procedure
  • Avoid supplements like vitamin E, fish oil and St. John’s wort for one week
  • Do not drink alcohol or caffeine for a day or two before your procedure
  • Remain well hydrated and eat plenty of leafy greens to boost your vitamin K storehouse
  • Consider taking Arnica supplements before and after your injections

Dr. Tan may provide you with additional instructions, depending on your specific situation. The closer you follow all directions, the better your odds of a safe and successful procedure.

The treatment experience

Dr. Tan carefully examines your facial concerns and discusses your cosmetic expectations to recommend the ideal dermal filler for you. She identifies the ideal treatment areas, and will take care to place your injections in strategic locations to produce an even, natural result.  The treatment will take only about 15-30 minutes, and most patients return to their regular day immediate after their appointment.

Recovery and results

The dermal filler process is simple and comfortable, leading to mild redness, irritation, swelling, firmness, and bruising at the treatment sites.  However, the side-effects aren’t significant enought o keep you from your daily activities.  Barring strenuous workouts, you can resume most of your activities and work immediately.  Even in the hands of experienced injector like Dr. Tan, bruising will occur more often than not, so please schedule your dermal filler injection treatment with appropriately timeline to recover.   Dr. Tan recommend planning two weeks before any big event or special occasion.

Dermal filler start working immediately, giving you an instantly smoother facial appearance.  However, the results of the treatment continue to improve as the hyaluronic acid gradually settles down.  You will notice the final results, with smooth, supple, and voluminous skin in 2-3 days, once the side-effects dissipates.  The results can last for many months and years depending on the dermal filler product used, and location of injection.
