How Chemical Peel Works
Improves Texture, Decreases Hyperpigmentation and Brightens Skin
As we go through life, the skin can accumulate sun damage, dirt, debris, makeup, oils and environmental toxins. When your skin has lost its luster, it can make you look older or wearier than you feel. Symptoms of aging like fine lines and brown spots can also start to appear, that are too difficult to address using everyday cleansing and exfoliation methods at home, A medical-grade chemical peel at MD Skin Lab may be the perfect solution for rejuvenating dull, tired skin and erasing some of those early aging signs.
A chemical peel is an aesthetic treatment that enhances and smooths skin that has developed uneven tone and texture. Early aging signs like acne, acne scar, sun damage, subtle lines and hyperpigmentation can also be addressed with these procedures. The most common formulations incorporate chemicals such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol. These substances are all FDA-approved for medical and cosmetic use. By using these specialized acid solutions to remove damaged, outermost skin layers, Dr. Tan can effectively eradicate facial blemishes and skin discoloration while producing a more vibrant complexion. Treatment concerns include:
Melasma | Acne | Acne Scar | Hyperpigmentation | Sun Damage | Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Benefits Of Chemical Peel
With a variety of solutions to select from, chemical peels can provide a wide range of benefits:
- Smoother, softer skin
- Noticeable reduction in fine lines and shallow scarring
- Less prominent brown spots and hyperpigmentation
- More even skin tone and texture
- Refreshed, rejuvenated appearance
The deeper peel you have, the more dramatic your results will be. However, deeper peels also require some downtime afterward, so you will need to plan to ensure you have some time off work and other activities to heal from your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Preparing for your treatment
Chemical peels are performed at MD Skin Lab in Honolulu. First, your skin is thoroughly cleansed, and numbing cream will be applied if necessary. The solution is applied to the skin and left on for a prescribed amount of time. At that time, a neutralizing agent will be used, and the peel is removed. You will be given a topical ointment to apply to the skin regularly after your treatment to support and sooth the skin during the healing process.
Your treatment experience will depend on the strength of your peel. You may notice some stinging or burning until the peel is neutralized. Depending on the intensity of the chemical peel, you may experience some reactions that are similar to when you receive a sunburn. There may be facial redness and scaling which lasts up to one week. Minor swelling, crusting and blistering are all normal.
Recovery and results
Most of the peels that is been used at MD Skin Lab requires just two to four days of recovery time, when your skin may look sunburned and feel dry and sensitive, with flaking and/or peeling. The amount of visible skin peeling post-treatment is not indicate of the success of the peel. Dr. Tan will remind you that you should not pick at any peeling or flaking skin, and follow her aftercare instructions to promote healing and ensure an optimal outcome, and reduce the risk of infection or scarring.
Potential side effects
The goal of the chemical peel is to remove varying degrees of the outer layers of the skin. Because this exfoliation is forced to a deeper degree, there is some redness and tenderness after your treatment. Your face will feel a little dry and like a medium sunburn. Medium peels will have visible peeling starting on day 3-4. Dr. Tan will provide specific insturctions on how. tocare for your skin during the recovery process to minimizing adverse effects, scarring or infection.
