ACNE AND ACNE SCAR

Acne is a common skin condition that affects the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles. Acne can form when oily secretions from the skin’s glands plug tiny openings for hair follicles.  Active acne can take the form of blackhead, white head or cystic lesions.  A serious case of acne will leave the skin scarred, rough, and pitted. At MD SKIN LAB, Dr. Tan provides acne and acne scar removal in Honolulu, bringing those with active acne or acne scars new hope with advanced techniques (think chemical peel, laser, RF microneedling et al) to improve skin quality, health, and appearance.

Active Acne Treatment

Acne is a common skin condition affecting about 80% of those between the ages of 11 and 30 at some point.  Although it’s not possible to get rid of your acne quickly, it’s never too late to treat them.  Upon first meeting with Dr. Tan, she will focus on getting your acne under control.  The fewer breakouts you have, the fewer scars you’ll get. And the good news is that not all acne scars are permanent.

Dr. Tan offers the most advanced Lutronic Hollywood Spectra Acne Laser Peel, which significantly eliminates active acne and delivers long lasting results in just three 30-minute sessions.

To understand how laser works in acne treatment, it’s important to understand how breakouts happen. Acne forms when sebum, the oily substance on your skin, combines with dead skin cells and clogs your pores.  The acne laser peel delivers precise energy to kill acne-causing bacteria living on and under the skin, while also penetrating deep into the skin to exfoliate the skin and unclog pores, stimulate quicker cell turnover, reduce sebum production and tightens pores.

With consistent treatment sessions, patients saw faster clearance of cystic acne, reduced frequency of breakouts and milder breakouts. The results may continue to improve with time – even several months after your treatment sessions are finished.

Unlike most traditional acne treatments Acne Laser Peel is free of harmful side effects, free of chemicals and toxins, and safe for all skin types and tones.  Patients tolerated the treatment well, without the need for pain medication or the need to stop the treatment session.  After treatment, mild symptoms such as redness inflammation and flareups are normal but fade quickly.  Dr. Tan recommend a series of three treatment 2-3 weeks apart, in anticipation to big events like prom or wedding.

Acne Scar Treatment

Long after acne clear up and the redness and irritation are gone, many of us carry unwanted remainders: scarring.  Unsightly scars left behind from acne can be tough to bear.

But whether your acne scars are raised or sunken, Dr. Tan can work with you on a treatment plan to and diminish the visible signs of scaring — think laser resurfacing, chemical peels and RF microneedling, et al.

One of the most popular treatment at MD Skin Lab for acne scar treatment is the Lutronic Genius RF (Radiofrequency) Microneedling. This treatment heats the skin and causes dermal collagen to shrink, leading to skin tightening. It also leads to the release of a whole host of signaling molecules and growth factors to generate longer term growth of new collagen.  Patients can essentially eliminate the appearance of acne scars over a short series of treatments, without any need for downtime. This simple and easy treatment process has become a popular option for many patients looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars and help to restore their skin.

While radiofrequency treatments can be uncomfortable, we have superior topical numbing, which decreases levels of discomfort significantly.

How Does RF Microneedling Help with Acne Scars?

The process for RF Microneedling treatment of acne scars is simple and painless. First, you’ll meet with Dr. Tan to discuss your medical history, current skin condition, and goals. Then, Dr. Tan will develop a curated treatment plan to reduce the appearance of your acne scars.

When you come in for RF Microneedling treatment, a topical numbing cream (anesthetic) will be applied to the treatment area. From there, Dr. Tan will use the Lutronic Genius RF Microneedling device to carefully rejuvenate the skin, improving skin tone and texture. After your appointment, you’ll be able to resume your normal daily activity. Side effects to treatment may include mild swelling or redness, but this should subside rather quickly after your treatment session.

Is there any downtime required for RF microneedling treatment?

As RF Microneedling is a non-invasive procedure, it requires virtually no downtime. Once you leave the office, you can go back to your normal schedule, although you may experience some minor redness or inflammation immediately post-treatment.

Does RF Microneedling Help Deep Acne Scars?

Microneedling devices, such as Lutronic Genius, are able to tailor needle depth to better treat varying levels of acne scarring. Both traditional microneedling and RF microneedling can be effective in treating mild, moderate, and severe acne scarring, and RF microneedling can help to smooth out skin tone, creating firmer, younger-looking skin where a scar once was.

Fractional RF for Acne Scars vs. Traditional Microneedling

The process for traditional microneedling and RF microneedling is essentially the same, as both involve tiny pinpricks to the skin that help to stimulate new collagen in the dermis. However, RF microneedling has the added benefit of radiofrequency energy which is proven to tighten and firm the skin, activating elastin and collagen production even further than traditional microneedling. Additionally, RF microneedling can only be performed by an expert medical professional. It’s also good to note that, though traditional microneedling can be performed by an aesthetician, deeper needles that are typically required for acne scar reduction can only be used in a medical office. Dr. Tan is an expert in reducing the appearance of acne scars, as well as treating hyperpigmentation due to acne and active acne breakouts. When you work with Dr. Tan, she’ll be able to analyze your skin type and current skin condition to determine which treatment is right for you.
